An Integrated Food, Energy, and Water Nexus, Human Well-Being, and Resilience (FEW-WISE) Framework: New Mexico

Interconnected food, energy, and water (FEW) nexus systems face many challenges to support human well-being (HWB) maintain resilience, especially in arid semiarid regions like New Mexico (NM), United States (US). Insufficient FEW resources, unstable economic growth due fluctuations prices of crude oil natural gas, inequitable education employment, climate change are some these challenges. Enhancing the resilience such coupled socio-environmental depends on efficient use improved understanding interlinkages across system components, adopting adaptable alternative management strategies. The goal this study was develop a framework that can be used enhance systems. An integrated water, well-being, (FEW-WISE) developed introduced study. This consists mainly five steps qualitatively quantitatively assess relationships, identify important external drivers, integrate using dynamics models, HWB performance indices, monitoring criterion threshold-based approach integrates indices. FEW-WISE evaluate predict dynamic behavior response environmental socioeconomic changes indicators. In conclusion, derived index inform decision-making processes guide development scenario-based strategies ecological vulnerable NM.
